Story of Delimara Dream Lighthouse and the oil painting

I can still remember the first time I laid my eyes on this dreamy lighthouse when I was nine years old. It wasn't in great condition back then but now thanks to Din l-Art Helwa it is well taken care of. Found at the outskirts of the picturesque village of Marsaxlokk, this lighthouse served for 135 years, between 1855 and 1990.
This is the only lighthouse in Malta equipped with a Fresnel lens. Initially it emanated just a red light but thanks to the Fresnel lens which was installed in 1896, it produced an alternating red and white light every thirty seconds. Later in 1956 due to defective mechanism it was replaced with a fixed white light. The tower wasn't that visible to mariners during the day, so it was painted in black and white.

It was de-activated in 1990 but an automated light source was installed on another building close to the lighthouse which still assists mariners to this day.
