Humble Marsaxlokk original oil painting

In loving memory of my father.

This fishing village in the south of Malta is understandably a tourist attraction for its mesmerizing beauty and the many restaurants providing good, healthy food. Its name meaning south-east (xlokk) harbour (Marsa).

There's so much history worth knowing about behind this small but resourceful village. Some curiosities including the remains found from the Neolithic to the fourth century AD era in the northeast area known as Tas-Silg. Its harbour was invaded by the Ottomans during the Great Seige of 1565 and by pirates during other times. Some forts and towers were built to protect the harbour including the Fort and Tower of Delimara and Fort Tas-Silg.

The building of the small but beautiful church started in 1890, with half of the expenses paid by Marchioness Rosalia Apap Viani Testaferrata who was devoted to the Lady of Rosary of Pompeii. She wanted to dedicated this church to her after being miraculously saved from a storm. The shape of the church was originally based on a rectangular form but it was later changed to the shape of a Latin cross. Adorning it are beautiful paintings including those of famous Maltese artist Giuseppe Cali.

Humble Marsaxlokk painting means a lot to me because this is where I was raised, and painting it brought back many childhood memories, mostly of my father and being by the sea.
