The fortress which turned into capital city. I truly believe it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Visually majestic, it is abundant with history, beautiful art, architecture and great eateries, which makes this city a true feast for the senses.

There is so much to see and experience that even to me, being a Maltese, I still find it to be a wonder and a joy to explore. I used to be a student and worker in this city and I felt really fortunate to be able to walk its streets everyday on my way to the art college and later to work.

It was ruled successively by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and the Order of the Knights of St John, hence all the history. As recognised by UNESCO its 320 monuments make it one of the most historic places in the world.

I wanted the painting to reflect the majestic side of it and I had to paint these two imposing churches. The dome is that of the Carmelite church, another building which was damaged during WWII and which took over 20 years to build again. Legend has it that the dome, at an unusual height of 42 metres, was to compete with this nearby Anglican church's spire. What's for sure is that these two churches have made Valletta's recognised skyline. The sight is even more beautiful with our traditional Maltese enclosed windows, of which there are plenty in Valletta.

Majestic Valletta original oil painting is painted in one of my favourite colour combinations. I painted the arches to represent the historical sites found underground this gem, also a must visit. Apart from the tunnels which were used by the troops, there are shelters which kept the Maltese people safe during war.

Limited edition prints are now available.
